Over the last few decades big business has taken over and its more and more difficult to make ends meet as a micro business.

At the same time our communities have become more and more fragmented, people don’t even know their neighbours and in the process we’ve seen the cost of living, unemployment, loneliness, depression, disconnection and even antisocial behaviour rise sharply.

It won’t surprise you that we believe these two things are directly linked.

So many people have so much to offer, but as they can’t see how to turn their value into a ‘real business’ they usually don’t bother trying to offer their services leaving them feeling all sorts of things including unfulfilled, disconnected, struggling financially (if they can’t get a job) and not as ‘valuable’ as they feel others are.

Some people have a more obviously viable idea and the resources to give it a try, but with non-existent budgets and wearing 17 hats as the owner-operator-everything else it’s near impossible to get much traction.

You can’t get enough awareness to bring customers to your own website, advertising is out of reach and so friends, family and markets have been the way to go.

This has been difficult for ages but it was ok until Covid-19 closed the markets and suddenly cut these sellers off from their customers.

Now we live in an even more disconnected world where many people are scared of those they don’t know and where the rules about what’s open and how we can do business seem to change every few weeks without warning.

Add to that the ‘no cash accepted here’, closed borders and working from home and we feel like we can see the writing on the wall … even more lonely people, even more disconnection and psychological isolation, a drive towards a cashless society where only big corporates survive.

This sounds like a nightmare to us!

We believe that humans need connection and belonging to thrive, that we are happier, healthier and more powerful when we are united.

Our view is that independent businesses offer an essential service to our community – whatever it is the business does combined with personal connection.
